Many people decide to leave their jobs for various reasons. Often times when a new baby is born one of the parents will choose to stay home. In today's work place that could be either the mom or the dad.
Other reasons would be to start your own home business, go back to school and get a degree, switch careers, take care of a sick parent, or maybe just to take a step back and look at where you are going with your life. After a period of time you may be ready to go back to work. Going back to work can present some challenges depending how long you have been gone. Things change. Technology is always changing.
The values of fellow employees change. What is expected of you changes. Certainly you can face personal challenges such as fear, lack of self confidence, as well as excitement and anticipation.
Here are 6 things you can do to help make going back to work an easier transition. 1. Decide what's most important. People who have been away from a regular job for a while may find it difficult to get back into the flow of things. I personally went back to my old job one time only to find that after a few months I just did not like doing it.
If you are going to go back to work be sure and see if you have other options as well as your old job. 2. Be picky. This could be the perfect time to think about new career choices, instead of just going back to what you used to do. Accepting temporary or freelance work would be a good way to experiment with new fields and opportunities.
3. Be realistic. People who have been out of the job market for a while need to realize that changes may have occurred. Be ready to experience these changes and not be surprised by anything. 4.
Brush up on your job skills. Depending on what you do you may have to take a class or go back over old training and notes from when you worked before you left. 5. Be positive and enthusiastic. You have a lot to offer from your previous work experience.
Even if things are different you can draw on that to get you off to a good start again. 6. Use connections.
Networking with previous co-workers or an old boss can be a great help in going back to work. Go out to lunch or make a phone call to get caught up. Going back to work can be challenging, but it can also be an exciting time for you. Getting prepared and putting together your own plan will go a long way in getting you back to work on the right foot.
